I was at the beginning of having a great day. The sun was shining, the birds were singing and I was enjoying a delicious breakfast of bacon and eggs. I was sitting at the kitchen table with my wife, chatting and laughing over our meal, when I decided to ask her for a slice of her bacon. “Honey, can I have a slice of your bacon?” Apparently, I had just declared war. Who knew? My wife’s eyes narrowed and she leaned forward, ready to do battle. “You want my bacon?” she asked, her voice low and dangerous. “Um, yes?” I replied, not sure what was going on. “You just declared war, buddy,” she said, picking up her fork and brandishing it like a weapon. “I did?” I asked, still confused. “How?” “By asking for a slice of my bacon, you have challenged me for ownership of this bacon,” she explained. “And I will not be defeated.” “But, I just wanted to share,” I protested. “Too late,” she said, stabbing her fork into the bacon and claiming it as her own. “You should have thought about that before you declared war.” And that’s how I learned that asking for a slice of bacon can be a dangerous proposition — even in your own home.
