Fighting to breathe isn’t pleasant but I often find myself doing it, even though I keep an inhaler handy. Our world is full of common and environmental contaminants that can irritate or trigger asthma symptoms without us being aware of it. Next thing you know you’re struggling to breathe. I’ve had many close calls.

My asthma began back in 2000, because of contaminates that entered Alaskan airspace from unidentifiable chemical fires in another country. I was just one of many Alaskan residents who found themselves in emergency rooms around the state with first-time respiratory difficulties or flareups of existing conditions.

What Is Asthma?

The asthma condition is a chronic lung disease that causes the airways to narrow, swell and tighten the lung walls, making it difficult to breathe. There are two major types of asthma: uncontrolled or chronic. In uncontrolled asthma, there is no known cause, and the main symptom is as the name infers; an uncontrollable feeling of not being able to breathe. Asthma can worsen, and left untreated can cause serious problems like chest pain, bronchospasms, an enlarged spleen, and blood clots.
